The South China Sea is one of, if not the most, contested territories in the world, with China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Taiwan,and the Philippines all advancing contradictory claims to the Sea. Up to$5 trillion in trade passes through the region each year, and it is thought to contain significant hydrocarbon reserves, both of which have helped to fuel continued controversy over control of the Sea.
