As a seasoned patent law professional with over a decade of experience and a strong technology background, Manu Bansal, Ph.D. assists clients in building and managing quality patent portfolios attuned to their business goals. He prepares, prosecutes, and litigates patents in high-tech areas, including multimedia coding and streaming, wireless communication, artificial intelligence, medical devices, and software. Manu works on strategic prosecution and handles Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) and US International Trade Commission (ITC) patent disputes involving standard-essential patents directed to video coding and streaming standards (H.266/VVC, H.265/HEVC, H.264/AVC, AV1, MPEG-DASH) and wireless standards (3GPP, 5G, 4G/LTE, IEEE 802.11).
Manu has successfully defended standard-essential patents, including several that he prosecuted, against inter partes review (IPR) and ex-parte reexamination challenges at the PTAB. He advises on intellectual property (IP) issues stemming from IP transactions and due diligence matters, and performs freedom to operate and infringement analyses to help clients navigate IP landscape in their marketplace.
Before entering the practice of law, Manu gained technical experience working at high-tech companies including Qualcomm and Siemens. During his doctoral studies, he researched video coding and wireless technologies including research in collaboration with Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome, NY. His research has been published in several leading peer-reviewed journals and academic conferences.
Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, Manu was a patent agent and an associate at another international law firm for many years where he prosecuted domestic and foreign patent applications related to signal processing, wireless communications, video/image coding, medical devices, and robotics for large corporations and start-up companies. He is fluent in Hindi.
