Morgan Lewis partner Eleanor Pelta participated on a panel, The New Landscape of US Immigration – 2013 and Beyond: Higher Fences, Wider Gates, as part of the 6th Biennial Global Immigration Conference on November 22, 2013.

Other panelists included Clayton Cartwright of The Cartwright Law Firm in Georgia; Ted Ruthizer, past president of AILA and current partner at Kramer, Levin, Naftalis & Frankel in New York; and Bill Stock, second vice president and current partner at Klasko, Rulon, Stock & Seltzer in Philadelphia.

The panel addressed and reviewed key legislative and administrative trends including:

  • Expansion of the ‘e-verify’ national electronic employment verification system
  • Increased enforcement against non-compliant employers
  • Increased border security and deportations
  • More visas for professionals and the highly-skilled, especially for those in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) occupations
  • More visas for entrepreneurs and investors
  • Pathways to permanent residence – ‘green cards’
  • What immigration options are possible for the 11 million undocumented people in the USA?
