Dion M. Bregman is a partner in Morgan Lewis’s Intellectual Property Practice. Mr. Bregman has two decades of global patent law experience—spanning numerous industries and disciplines. He focuses on patent litigation and counseling and represents public and private companies in software and hardware; media, Internet, and telecommunications; medical devices; aerospace; and business methods. He also serves as a deputy leader of the Intellectual Property Practice and as the hiring partner for our Silicon Valley office.
From his base in the heart of Silicon Valley, Mr. Bregman oversees large domestic and foreign patent portfolios, working with Fortune 500 companies as well as startups. He has authored and prosecuted thousands of patent applications, dozens of post-grant proceedings, including inter partes reviews, re-examinations, and reissue applications. He also regularly prepares exculpatory opinions of counsel.
Mr. Bregman also has an active litigation practice. In 2012, he was named a “California Lawyer of the Year” for Intellectual Property by California Lawyer. The magazine cited Mr. Bregman’s role as part of the Morgan Lewis team that carried “a small technology company to a $140 million victory” in ActiveVideo v. Verizon in the Eastern District of Virginia. The win was one of the five largest patent damage awards in the U.S. the previous year with a total expected recovery in excess of $260 million.
Mr. Bregman joined Morgan Lewis in 2004 after practicing intellectual property law at high-profile firms based in New York City and Johannesburg, South Africa. He is admitted to practice in California and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Central Districts of California, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
