To Our Alumni Community,
It is with a very heavy heart that I share the news that Morgan Lewis alumnus Bill Zimmerman passed away on October 6 after a year-long battle with brain cancer at the age of 56. Bill’s wife, Luanne, was at his side. In addition to Luanne, Bill is survived by three children, Bryce, Paige, and Blake.
Bill, who retired in March to focus on his health, spent two decades at our firm and was a long-time favorite in the Philadelphia office and in our tax practice. He served as partner-in-charge for the Philadelphia tax team until his retirement and formerly served on our Diversity & Inclusion Committee.

Bill was a skilled lawyer who guided clients on the creation and operation of private and pooled investment vehicles and counseled on general corporate and individual tax planning matters. A member of the prestigious American College of Tax Counsel, Bill formerly served as chair of the Investment Management Committee of the American Bar Association’s Tax Section. He also frequently spoke on tax-related topics, and many will remember him for his annual presentations at our Private Fund Investor Roundtable.

Outside the office, Bill cherished spending time with his family and particularly loved family gatherings at their home on the Jersey Shore. During his illness, Bill chose to remain very private, but he invited Bart Bassett, the leader of the tax practice, to share a long weekend with him this past May at the Zimmerman beach house in New Jersey. Both Bart and I stayed in close touch with Luanne throughout the year, and she and Bill were very grateful for the many good wishes he received from his colleagues.
It is unclear if the memorial service will be open beyond family, but we will keep you posted. In the meantime, if you would like to send a note to the family, you can do so by sending an email to our alumni team. All messages will be shared with Bill’s family. If you choose, you can also make a donation in Bill’s memory to any charities and organizations of your choice that research and treat brain cancer.
I invite our Morgan Lewis family—past and present—to join me in sending condolences to Bill’s family, and please take a moment to remember Bill with gratitude.
