Colin C. West
Colin West is a litigator, first-chair trial lawyer, and investigator who focuses his practice on antitrust cases, “no-poach” cases, class actions, American Indian tribal disputes, and other high-stakes litigation. He has had favorable results for his clients across a wide variety of industries, including high technology, agriculture, energy, and automotive. He is a frequent instructor and lecturer on litigation techniques and strategies.
Colin also has an extensive background with internal investigations for a number of high technology and other companies, and was a private investigator before attending law school.
Colin frequently counsels clients on antitrust and ediscovery issues as well as matters regarding American Indian tribal sovereignty. He serves on the board of directors of the Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF), is a former chair of BASF’s Antitrust and Business Regulation Section, and is a frequent contributor to industry and legal publications regarding “no-poach” agreements and other issues.
Colin is also deeply involved in efforts to reform police use-of-force policies. He serves on BASF’s Criminal Justice Task Force; was an adviser to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office’s Blue Ribbon Panel on Transparency, Accountability and Fairness in Law Enforcement; and served on a working group advising the San Francisco Police Commission on changes to its use-of-force policies.
Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, Colin was a partner in the antitrust and trade regulation practice of another international law firm, where he led the Northern California regional hiring committee. He also was an assistant district attorney in the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.
- Alameda County Flood Control, et al. v. California Department of Water Resources – Obtained complete defense verdict for a group of water contractors in a trial over the allocation of benefits from the Hyatt-Thermalito power facility; named one of the year’s top defense verdicts by the California Daily Journal
- Episcopal Senior Communities, et al. v. Episcopal Diocese of California – Obtained complete defense verdict at trial for Episcopal Senor Communities and an affiliate in a corporate control dispute against the diocese
- California Tomato Growers Association v. Morning Star Packing Co. – Obtained complete plaintiff’s verdict at trial in a dispute with California’s largest tomato processor regarding the price of processing tomatoes
- Picayune Rancheria of Chukchansi Indians v. Rabobank, et al. – Obtained summary judgment and/or dismissal for an international bank and other defendants in a series of lawsuits in tribal, state, and federal courts involving competing factions of an American Indian tribe over casino revenue
- Persian Gulf Inc. v. BP West Coast Products LLC – Obtained summary judgment in a suit alleging price-fixing in the wholesale gasoline market
- In re TFT-LCD Antitrust Litigation – Represented Sharp Corp. and Sharp Electronics Corp. in connection with class and individual actions in the Northern District of California related to alleged price-fixing of TFT-LCD panels that are used in TVs, computer monitors, laptops, cellphones, and other products
- Intel v. Multivideo Laboratories – Obtained summary judgment for a large technology company in a case alleging monopolization of the computer peripherals market
- Shahbazi v. Equilon Enterprises – Represented a major petroleum manufacturer in a series of nationally publicized cases alleging conspiracy, price discrimination, and franchise violations in the wholesale gasoline market, obtaining summary judgment in each case
- In re Vitamins Antitrust Litigation – Represented two large corporations in a multijurisdictional class action and suits by attorneys general alleging antitrust price-fixing in the vitamins market
