US-Canada Stalemate Expected To Hold Amid USMCA Review, Law360

Law360 quoted partner Casey Weaver in an article examining the outlook for US-Canada trade relations as the United States, Mexico, and Canada begin the formal review process for the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

The article explores how ongoing tariff disputes may shape negotiations and affect cross-border trade, particularly for key Canadian industries. Casey noted that certain US tariff programs have not included protections for qualifying North American goods.

“There haven’t always been USMCA carveouts in the various tariff programs, particularly the sectoral tariff programs that affect imports from Canada, your metals tariffs and your lumber and timber tariffs,” Casey said. “So Canadian goods are really being heavily affected, and Canada hasn’t had as many bilateral discussions with the U.S.”
