Jacob Grotenrath focuses his practice on intellectual property (IP) disputes and related commercial disputes. Drawing on his mechanical engineering background and experience with technologies ranging from mobility technology to voice-enabled consumer electronics, Jake helps clients distill complex products, technical records, and expert evidence into clear litigation strategy. He assists clients in US district courts and contributes to post-grant proceedings before the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Jake has worked on matters involving patent litigation, trademarks, false advertising, unfair competition, trade secrets, commercial interference claims, and other business tort disputes. His technology experience spans transportation and mobility systems, medical devices, wearable technologies, consumer electronics, semiconductor technologies, and voice-enabled devices.

Across these disputes, Jake helps case teams analyze accused products and prior art, develop technical and legal case themes, prepare pleadings and motions, manage discovery, support claim construction, work with experts, and prepare inter partes, post-grant, and ex parte reviews before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).

Before joining Morgan Lewis, Jake worked at multiple IP boutique law firms. He also studied at the University of Houston Law Center, where he was a senior articles editor for the Houston Journal of Health Law & Policy, a research assistant for Professor Jessica Roberts, and treasurer for the Intellectual Property Organization.

Prior to attending law school, Jake received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Kettering University while working as a product engineering co-op at Eaton in its heavy-duty transmission department. That engineering and product-development experience gives him practical insight into the design, testing, and technical tradeoffs that often sit at the center of technology disputes.
