Reaction: AI Inventorship in the US Just Took a Leap Into the Unknown, World IP Review

Partner Manita Rawat spoke with World IP Review about recent guidance from the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) clarifying the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the patent process and reaffirming the USPTO’s stance that AI cannot be named as an inventor.

Manita told the publication that the guidance provides “welcome clarity,” with a key benefit being “greater predictability.”

“The guidance treats AI systems like laboratory equipment or software, helping companies structure internal innovation processes, document human contribution, and avoid naming AI tools in application materials,” Manita noted.
