What the Military Taught Two Morgan Lewis Trial Lawyers About Leading, and What They Had to Unlearn, The AmLaw Litigation Daily 

Partners Donald (Donny) English and Jason Mills are featured in this AmLaw Litigation Daily Q&A about what their military service taught them about leading litigation teams. 

Donny and Jason credit military service with instilling responsibility, confidence, teamwork, and leadership, but emphasize that effective courtroom leadership requires adapting those lessons to a less hierarchical environment. Jason, a former Marine lawyer who handled court-martial cases and served in Iraq, says being entrusted with cases early taught him independence and gave him perspective under pressure. 

Donny, a former Air Force officer and Air Force Academy graduate, now co-leads the firm’s labor and employment trial-ready team, and describes leadership as his “secret sauce” as a trial lawyer, encompassing not only courtroom advocacy but also managing the trial team, client, budget, and relationship with the jury.

Both also stress the importance of creating trial opportunities for the next generation advising associates to seek out partners who actually try cases, contribute creatively, and embrace smaller courtroom roles as stepping stones.
