Partner Meaghan Kent’s comments on singer Ed Sheeran’s win in a US copyright trial are featured in a Managing IP article. The UK musician was cleared of copyright infringement on May 4 on the basis that he had independently created his song “Thinking Out Loud.” Sheeran was accused of copying Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On.”
Meaghan noted that Sheeran’s appearance on the stand was particularly important because he helped drive home the message that the case came down to a few chords common in pop music. She pointed out the defense’s strong argument that this was the case and that Sheeran’s testimony incorporated this.
“The team did a good job at simplifying it and continuing to go back to that point,” she said.
