Maya A. Hairston concentrates her practice on tax controversy matters, defending clients in disputes and litigation with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Maya assists clients with federal taxation issues ranging from transfer pricing and information reporting to government contracts and digital assets (including cryptocurrency). Maya successfully assisted with a major tax trial before the US Tax Court during her first year with the firm. During law school, Maya externed for the US Department of Justice, Tax Division and worked on civil tax litigation, estate tax, and bankruptcy matters.

Extended Profile

Prior to law school, Maya interned for the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia, assisting with criminal trials. Maya was a Distinguished Scholar at UCLA School of Law and an editor for UCLA Law Review. During her law school tenure, she was also a David J. Epstein Public Interest Law and Policy Scholar focusing most of her studies on tax law and economic justice. She graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from George Mason University and employs those skills regularly in her practice of law. Maya’s undergraduate studies, in conjunction with her family’s military background and her extensive global travels, exposed her to many geographic environments and cultures. These experiences broaden her worldview, which in turn allows her to be more empathetic to client needs and committed to providing outstanding client service.
