Thomas M. Peterson represents clients in complex civil litigation appeals, and in trial court litigation in anticipation of possible appeals. He has argued more than 75 appeals before state and US federal appellate courts. Tom has appeared before most of the federal circuit courts of appeal, including the Federal Circuit. He prepared the appellate briefs in most of those cases and in many, many others. Tom also prepares amicus curiae briefs on behalf of clients.
Tom mounts high-stakes appeals of adverse pretrial and post-trial decisions, and defends favorable trial court decisions on appeal. He has also sought and obtained interlocutory appellate review of adverse summary judgments, class certifications, and discovery orders, among other rulings. Clients in high-tech, healthcare, retail, construction, pharmaceutical, financial services, and other industries have turned to him to argue on their behalf.
From time to time, Tom serves as a teaching practitioner–adviser in the appellate advocacy course at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law. He is also a member of the American Law Institute.
