Michael J. Madderra counsels on the intersection of healthcare privacy, security, and technology matters, including the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by large health systems and small provider groups, regulatory compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH), as well as state Consumer Health Data (CHD) privacy laws. Drawing from his experience in complex healthcare litigation and trial work, Mike provides his clients with practical and actionable advice.
He also advises healthcare and other industry clients on corporate structuring, contracts, and internal investigations. In addition to counseling on federal laws such as HIPAA and HITECH, he is highly experienced with state level legislation such as the Washington My Health My Data Act (MHMDA) and the California Consumer Protection Act (CCPA). While he primarily focuses on healthcare privacy and security compliance, Mike maintains a robust complex litigation practice in state and federal courts. His litigation matters include healthcare, medical malpractice, product liability defense, and commercial disputes.
Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, Mike worked on healthcare, privacy, and litigation matters at other law firms in the Seattle area. In law school, he was the executive articles editor of the Pacific Rim Law & Policy Journal and externed for Judge Julie Spector of the King County Superior Court and at the Federal Trade Commission’s Northwest Region. Mike lives in Seattle with his wife and two sons.
