Data Driven Production Conference 2017

June 06, 2017 to June 07, 2017

Morgan Lewis partner Erik Hawes will present on the panel for "Guarding the 'Crown Jewels' - Confidentiality and Trade Secrets of Production Data."

As the use of "big data" becomes more prevalent in the oilfield, there has been much discussion about how to protect intellectual property rights relating to the manner and methods of collecting the data - but perhaps even more important is the protection of IP rights in the data itself. Proprietary data generated using new technology, and the algorithms used to analyze such data, are now often the lifeblood of a company in this industry. Accordingly, this program will examine best practices for protecting such sensitive information, including:

  • Guidelines for establishing and maintaining trade secret protection
  • The consistent use of appropriate nondisclosure agreements for all individuals with access to confidential data
  • Employee training and communication
  • Physical security of all devices used to collect and store confidential data
  • Computer and IT security measures
