In an interview with The National Law Journal about IP litigation in 2022, partner Brent Hawkins briefly touched on one of the Supreme Court’s biggest intellectual property cases of the year, Google v. Oracle. Brent said that the Court’s ruling, which concluded that Google’s unauthorized copying of Oracle’s Java application programming interfaces was a fair use, “gave us different values on how to define the use and purpose of a work.” Brent added that he expects the ruling to impact the automotive industry. “I’d like to see how it plays out there as we move to more connected technologies. Enterprise software installation will be at issue in what people can do to update,” he said.
