Navy Fuel Spill 10-Times Larger Than First Revealed, KHON2

December 22, 2021

Representing the Honolulu Board of Water Supply, partner Ella Foley Gannon questioned a US Navy representative during a hearing regarding the contamination of an aquifer near the Red Hill fuel storage facility in Hawaii. In its coverage of the hearing, KHON2 quoted Ella’s exchange with the witness during which he confirmed the amount of fuel that was actually released as a result of the recent leak. “Just to be clear, my understanding is 42 gallons in a barrel, is that correct?” she asked of Captain James Meyer. “And so if you do the math,” Ella added, “It ends up being somewhere a little bit in excess of 19,000 gallons of fuel we will be talking about there.”
