Morgan Lewis Foundation Awards 2022 Scholarships to 14 Diverse Law Students

Monday, May 23, 2022

PHILADELPHIA, May 23, 2022: The Morgan Lewis Foundation has awarded its 2022 Diversity Scholarships to 14 students from eight US law schools. With this latest class of scholars, the independent 501(c)(3) organization has awarded 67 scholarships to promising law students since its founding in 2014.

“Supporting a diverse pipeline of incoming lawyers is a key part of our commitment to fostering a more inclusive legal community as a whole,” Firm Chair Jami McKeon said. “We recognize these are extremely challenging times for our next-generation lawyers and our industry, so the Morgan Lewis Foundation has doubled the amount of diversity scholarships over the past two years to provide these incredibly talented law students with some of the resources needed to thrive in our profession.”

The grants—typically $40,000 per student—are provided in four installments at the beginning of each semester of the recipients’ second and third years of law school. Unlike other scholarships, the grant isn’t tied to employment at Morgan Lewis as the foundation’s mission is to increase diversity in the legal profession as a whole. The 2022 Morgan Lewis Foundation scholars represent a racially diverse class of promising lawyers:

  • Esosa Asemota, Duke University School of Law
  • Clare Connaughton, University of California, Berkeley, School of Law
  • Elizabeth Dia, New York University School of Law

Established using a fee award granted to Morgan Lewis in a historic settlement of a pro bono matter on behalf of Black families working to combat nearly a century of government-sponsored racial segregation in public housing in Baltimore, the Morgan Lewis Foundation provides financial support to promising law students from underrepresented groups. The Morgan Lewis Foundation board includes Chief Engagement Officer Amanda Smith and partners Michelle Park Chiu, Nagwa Hultquist, Rahul Kapoor, Tim Levin, Grace Speights, Chuck Shimada, and Sara Wells.
