WASHINGTON, DC, March 7, 2023: The American Bar Association (ABA) honored partner Sheri Dillon with the 2023 Janet Spragens Pro Bono Award during the Tax Section’s midyear meeting in San Diego. The award is presented each year to an individual, law firm, or organization that has demonstrated outstanding and sustained commitment to pro bono legal services, particularly with respect to US federal and state tax law.
Sheri was recognized for her commitment to advancing equal representation in the tax system, and the key role she continues to play in ensuring individual taxpayers receive representation regardless of their ability to pay for an attorney and in advancing the needs of unrepresented and low-income taxpayers throughout the tax system and the tax law community. During her career, she helped launch the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law’s Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic, a program dedicated to providing legal services to low-income taxpayers. Currently, Sheri serves as a director and president of the Washington, DC Center for Public Interest Tax Law, whose mission is to provide pro bono tax services to the greater DC community. Sheri recently served as an officer of the ABA Tax Section, the vice-chair for pro bono and outreach.
In her practice, Sheri focuses on federal tax controversy matters, guiding clients through IRS examinations and appeals, the administrative claims process, and litigation. She also counsels clients on a variety of business and tax-planning matters that involve acquisitions, dispositions, combinations, and debt restructuring and reorganizations, with a special focus on partnership transactions and closely held businesses.
