Government Shutdown Unlikely to Mean Enforcement Reprieve for Advisors, Financial Planning

Partner Fred Block spoke with Financial Planning about the importance of advisors continuing to adhere to US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) rules in the event the federal government shuts down. Block, who previously served as supervisory trial counsel in the agency’s Enforcement Division and saw three shutdowns during his time at the SEC, said one reason advisors should remain vigilant is that it is hard to predict how long the government will stay shut down.

"Nobody knows how long this is going to last," Fred said. "But any smart registrant would know that would be taking a huge risk, knowing they might be back on the job on Wednesday."
