Partner Jane Accomando was quoted in a Bloomberg Law article analyzing a series of recent executive orders from the Trump administration that signal renewed interest in nuclear waste reprocessing and recycling.
Jane noted that there historically has not been much industry interest in reprocessing nuclear fuel due to the existing collection and disposal contracts with the federal government. “[W]hy would they pay to reprocess that fuel when they’ve already paid to dispose of it,” she said.
Jane added that the section of the executive order addressing the domestic nuclear fuel cycle “does have enormous potential to lead to a working policy in our country for handling spent nuclear fuel, be it through reprocessing or disposal.”
