Who Gets “No Tax on Overtime”? It’s Messy, The Wall Street Journal

Partners Mary Hevener and Steven Johnson were quoted in an article in The Wall Street Journal discussing a new federal tax policy that allows certain types of overtime pay to be tax-deductible; however, determining who qualifies is complex, and many workers expecting relief may not receive it.

“There’s a big gap between that assumption by many hopeful people and what actually we think is going to happen,” Mary said. “A lot of the overtime that people are receiving is not going to be subject to this tax benefit,” she added.

Steven noted that “[e]mployers responsible for implementing the deduction don’t get direct benefits” and many employers “have to explain to employees the differences between overtime amounts on pay stubs and tax forms.”
