Smart Meter Privacy Bill Takes Aim at Foreign-Owned Utilities, FTCWatch

Partner Hannah Levin spoke with FTCWatch about proposed federal legislation that would restrict certain foreign-owned electric utilities’ use of consumers’ smart meter data and give the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) new responsibilities for establishing data security and retention standards.

Hannah noted that the proposal would expand the FTC’s role in this area.

“[The bill is] asking the FTC to establish reasonable security and retention standards for smart meter data, which historically has not been something that the FTC has done,” she said.
