‘Bold Ambitions’: Incoming Morgan Lewis Chair Plots Out Firm Strategy, The American Lawyer
October 01, 2026Firm Chair David McManus spoke with The American Lawyer about his four foundational priorities for the firm, which center on client service, practice development, professional culture, and disciplined innovation, and his leadership team that will help crystallize and execute on that vision. These four pillars, he explained, structure his vision for growth and for “amplifying” the firm’s current offerings.
“Our growth is driven by two principles. One is, does it enhance the client service that we can provide? Second, will it be done in a way that’s true to our culture?” Mr. McManus said. “When I look back in five years, we’re not looking for a specific number. Chasing numbers or what other firms may be doing in the market is not consistent with my strategic vision.”
Looking beyond Day 1, Mr. McManus said, “We will seize a unique moment in the marketplace. We will be stronger globally across our practice groups and offices, both in the United States and abroad, but we’ll also be able to look around the firm and our culture will remain the magnet that it is for clients and laterals. It will still be the thing that is the glue that holds us together.”
