A registered patent agent, Lauren Segal, Ph.D. concentrates her practice on biotechnology, agri-technology, and pharmaceutical patent matters with an emphasis on patent prosecution. She holds her Ph.D. in plant pathology and fungal genetics and an M.S. in soil microbiology. Her areas of background include agronomy, mycobiology, immunology, genetics, microbiology, and molecular biology. From startups to large companies, clients look to Lauren for technological advice in support of validity, infringement, and patentability analysis in the biotechnology, agriculture, medical device, and diagnostics areas.
In her previous roles, Lauren managed all aspects of intellectual property (IP) and commercialization for a portfolio of scientific innovations including medicals devices, therapeutics, and diagnostics; guided faculty members and graduate students through the process of commercializing early-stage technologies; and negotiated license agreements with external companies and faculty-led startups.
Her representative experience includes patent prosecution; tech transfer at an Ag school; assisting early-stage technologies get licensed out; helping individual inventors plan IP strategy for startups; drafting plant patents for agriculture clients; and Plant Variety Protection (PVP).
In addition to her work, Lauren serves as a co-chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee for the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago (IPLAC). She is also a member of the LGBTQ+ Bar Association of Chicago (LAGBAC).
