Owen Afriye

Associate

Owen Afriye advises on technology transactions, data protection, and emerging digital regulation, particularly where new technologies meet new or rapidly developing regulatory regimes. He helps clients develop practical legal and regulatory strategies that enable new products, services, and business models while managing risk across different markets. His practice draws on experience across the UK, Middle East, and Africa, including a recent secondment with Apple as privacy counsel for the Middle East and Africa.

Owen acts for both customers and suppliers on the development, procurement, supply, and outsourcing of technology and technology-enabled services, including software and cloud services, AI, IP licensing and assignment, and strategic collaborations. His work spans digital infrastructure, fintech, cybersecurity, and data-driven technologies, alongside the privacy and data issues that increasingly form part of technology transactions.

A particular focus of Owen’s practice is the geo-expansion of technology products and services. He advises on the privacy and digital regulatory questions that can arise when established global products enter regional markets with newer or less settled legal frameworks, including data localization, data transfer restrictions, regulatory approvals and compliance requirements, and the application of local laws to global product models. Where the legal position is unclear, Owen works with clients to develop legal arguments and proportionate risk positions grounded in the local framework and how the technology operates in practice. He also helps clients translate those positions into workable contractual arrangements with counterparties and supports engagement with regulators and policymakers where appropriate.
