Samuel D. Thomas
Sam Thomas counsels companies and content creators across the media ecosystem—including news, entertainment, publishing, interactive, and social media—to navigate speech, intellectual property, First Amendment, shareholder, and commercial disputes in state and federal court.
A contributing author to the Massachusetts Tort Law Manual on defamation and a lecturer for the New England First Amendment Coalition on subjects including the right to record and Massachusetts’ Public Records Law, Sam’s experience helps new and legacy media outlets throughout the news reporting process—from getting access to records through pre-publication review and defamation defense.
Sam also counsels clients in complex commercial litigation in state and federal court, as well as domestic and international arbitrations. Leveraging his experience with commercial, speech, intellectual property, and shareholder disputes, Sam brings a holistic approach to complex commercial litigation strategy and execution to protect client interests across parallel and collateral disputes.
Before joining Morgan Lewis, Sam served as a law clerk to Judge William G. Young of the US District Court for the District of Massachusetts and as an intern for Judge Marianne B. Bowler. Sam has also frequently served as an adjunct professor at Boston College Law School.
