To Buy AI or Build AI? For Some of the Am Law 100, the Answer Is ‘Both,’ The American Lawyer

In the third installment in a series on how Am Law 100 law firms are incorporating generative AI in their legal services and business functions, Morgan Lewis’s and Thomson Reuters’ strategic partnership was featured, noting that the firm “will get early access to generative AI apps and provide feedback on how to make them more lawyer-friendly.”

“I can’t think of a law firm that invests $100 million in AI,” Dion Bregman said. “It’s just not the way law firms are set up. For Morgan Lewis to see behind the curtain and to have an impact on the direction it takes is very beneficial to us.”

Thomson Reuters has addressed concerns of AI hallucinations to the satisfaction of Morgan Lewis’s chief knowledge management officer Colleen Nihill, who said Westlaw Precision uses retrieval augmented generation, which allows users to understand how responses are generated.
