China Uses for the First Time New Rules to Counter ‘Improper’ Foreign Jurisdiction Over Its Firms, The Straits Times

The Straits Times quoted partner Todd Liao in an article examining China’s first use of newly enacted rules aimed at countering what it views as improper foreign extraterritorial jurisdiction over Chinese companies.

The article explores China’s expanding legal toolkit designed to shield domestic companies from foreign sanctions, investigations, and data requests as geopolitical and trade tensions intensify.

“We are seeing a shift from a legislative framework to active enforcement, driven by the expanding scope of foreign investigations,” Todd said, adding that multinational companies operating in China now face “a direct legal collision between EU regulatory demands and China’s explicit prohibition.”
