Changing Net Zero Frameworks Signal Opportunity for ESG-Focused Businesses, Experts Say, Lexology Pro

Lexology Pro quoted partner Levi McAllister in an article examining how two newly released global net-zero standards present new opportunities for businesses developing climate and ESG strategies.

The article explores how the Science-Based Targets initiative’s updated Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2.0 and the International Organization for Standardization’s proposed ISO 14060 framework fit within the evolving ESG landscape. Levi explained that the emergence of multiple frameworks reflects the varying levels of maturity among organizations pursuing decarbonization goals, rather than competing approaches.

“While some entities have been focused on carbon neutrality for some time, others are relatively new to the space and so alternative frameworks may be more appropriate than SBTi’s guidelines,” Levi said. “Viewed holistically, the issuance of ISO standards and the existence of SBTi 2.0 should be celebrated as twin aims designed to promote the mutual goal of emissions reduction and, eventually, carbon neutrality.”
