John C. Goodchild, III
John C. Goodchild, III is a litigator, counselor, and leader within the firm, focusing his practice on financial restructuring and bankruptcy, commercial litigation, real estate, fraud and business torts, employee benefits and ERISA, and financial services and trusts. He is a trial lawyer with more than 30 years of experience in the courtroom and in alternative dispute resolution proceedings.
John is a former leader of the firm’s reorganization and bankruptcy practice. He has industry knowledge in investment funds, energy, financial services, and professional services. His management experience includes commercial litigation, trial training, and bankruptcy and restructuring. He has teaching experience in trial advocacy, risk management and fiduciary responsibility, written advocacy, and oral presentation.
John represents financial institutions, professional services firms, investors, and fiduciaries in litigation and disputes relating to restructuring proceedings, workouts and distressed situations, commercial contracts, and real estate transactions. He represents investors and fiduciaries appointed in non-US jurisdictions in Chapter 15 cases and other cross-border restructuring matters involving corporations, investment funds, and private equity structures. John defends actions brought by bankruptcy trustees, receivers, and liquidators asserting breach of fiduciary duty, aiding and abetting, fraudulent transfer, subordination, and preference. Furthermore, he represents plan sponsors and health and welfare plans in employee benefits and ERISA litigation relating to contributions, benefits, restructuring proceedings, workouts, and financial distress.
John is the co-founder and former lead coordinator of the Morgan Lewis Trial Academy, an intensive week-long trial training program for the firm’s most senior associates. He also serves as chair of the firm’s Fiduciary Review Committee. Additionally, John is an adjunct faculty member of the Villanova University School of Law.
