Joshua L. Savey focuses his practice on the investment management industry, advising on the formation and taxation of private and pooled investment vehicles such as private equity funds, hedge funds, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), real estate investment trusts (REITs), real estate funds, opportunity zone funds, cryptocurrency funds, and other investment-related entities. Josh represents both sponsors and investors, including tax-exempt investors that are sensitive to the unrelated business income tax and sovereign wealth funds, with respect to such matters.

Josh also advises buyers, sellers, and managers within the private investment fund industry in secondary transactions of all types. With more than a decade of experience, spanning serving as a law clerk at the US Tax Court, a “Big Four” public accounting firm, and several years at multinational law firms, Josh delivers sophisticated tax counsel to clients.

In addition to his experience in investment management matters, Josh regularly advises clients with respect to information reporting, digital assets, and international tax issues, including issues related to the Foreign Investment in Real Property Tax Act (FIRPTA) and Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA).

Josh began his career as a law clerk for Judge L. Paige Marvel of the US Tax Court, followed by a position in the international tax group of the Washington National Tax Services office of PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP. Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, Josh was an associate at another multinational law firm advising clients on investment vehicles, financing arrangements, and capital market matters. Josh remains active in the Tax Section of the American Bar Association and the J. Edgar Murdock Inn of Court.
