USPTO Puts Pendency, Backlog in Its Crosshairs With New Initiatives, MLex

Partner John Hemmer spoke with MLex for an article about the US Patent and Trademark Office’s (USPTO’s) Streamlined Claim Set Pilot Program, which expedites examination of patent claims that meet certain criteria.

John told the publication that the new program is welcome news for solo inventors and other small and medium-sized enterprises, noting that the USPTO’s existing “Track One” program comes with an upcharge that can be cost-prohibitive for some. Therefore, John said, the Streamlined Claim Set Pilot Program will likely be “particularly attractive for smaller entities that haven’t wanted to pay to expedite examination but would still be interested in a way to move to the front of the queue.”
