Harry Johnson and Lakeisha Andress wrote an article for SHRM’s HR Magazine exploring the benefits and potential legal pitfalls of employee-driven groups focused on shared and often protected characteristics, life experiences, or interests.
They detail how employee resource groups (ERGs) have several professional and personal benefits but can also pose unique challenges stemming from the National Labor Relations Act or whether the company is unionized or not, the article notes.
“By taking several proactive steps, employers can maximize the tremendous potential benefits of ERGs and limit legal risks,” they wrote.
