The Morgan Lewis eData team delivers innovation and efficiency across all of the discovery and information governance challenges our clients face. Using the best of technology and mobility, we have the global capacity to provide end-to-end discovery and information governance anywhere on the planet. Our unique hybrid team of lawyers and technologists serves clients across a wide range of industries and practice areas. Our mission is to combine great lawyering with technology and process to deliver real efficiency and value to clients.
We offer a full range of eDiscovery technology and services that cover every component of the Electronic Discovery Reference Model globally. Our lawyers provide counseling and project-management services for discovery needs that stem from litigation, government investigations, and internal investigations. We are well-versed in data privacy laws and regulations and understand the data protection considerations corporations face when US courts require production of documents from parties outside the United States. Our technology team provides data collection, processing, hosting, and production services using state-of-the-art systems. In addition to reactive discovery services, we provide proactive data management, information governance, privacy/cyber security, and discovery readiness counseling to prepare enterprises for efficient and effective responses to discovery demands.
We serve as National Discovery Counsel to some of the world’s largest enterprises and understand the needs of large, complex organizations. Our team helps these clients reduce costs and increase predictability using the latest discovery technologies and alternative fee arrangements. Our clients enjoy substantial savings throughout the information lifecycle, including during the document review phase of discovery, for which we have designed and leveraged industry-leading advanced analytics and predictive coding workflows.
With our global footprint, EU data center, and top-tier international, regional, and local legal capability, Morgan Lewis’s eData practice now delivers electronic discovery/disclosure, data analytics, regulatory and investigative support, contract management, and information governance services worldwide. Our hybrid team of lawyers and technologists is positioned to provide true end-to-end services related to disclosures, information governance, and contract management. We help clients increase predictability using defensible, repeatable processes while leveraging the latest data analytics technologies. Understanding the critical nature of data privacy and information governance, Morgan Lewis’s eData team has partnered with Special Counsel/D4 to establish a state-of-the-art, high-security data center in China to help multinational clients better meet growing regulatory obligations. Our Shanghai-based data center enables our team to collect, process, analyze, review, and prepare data and documents for disclosure, all within China, using the Relativity platform.
Although the technical and legal requirements of discovery and disclosure—as well as their expense—continue to challenge companies of all kinds, data privacy laws and access are the major challenges on the global stage. China’s Cybersecurity Law and other data protection regulations require that data be stored in China and reviewed by Chinese lawyers before being transferred. Our Shanghai data center provides the physical infrastructure necessary to comply with China’s data protection laws—a more defensible solution than attempting to transfer data outside of China or host it on a cloud platform.
Chinese clients and companies doing business in China benefit from our eData practice’s full forensic collection capability that optimized efficiency and outcomes while minimizing the potential for large financial expenditures or major business interruptions. Our proprietary China collection kits, which reside in our Shanghai center, are fully equipped with custodian consent forms and can be used for targeted document collections or full forensic imaging.
Our Shanghai center offers Relativity, an industry-leading, scalable document review platform—the same platform we offer in the United States and European Union. Relativity’s security is robust, dynamic, and granular. It restricts users from creating screenshots, copying text, and printing documents, and permissions are granted only by system administrators. Relativity also has the ability to handle multiple languages, allows review in non-English languages in native formats, and goes beyond Unicode compliance to support a large range of other source encoding types that accommodate multiple language documents and review.

Our eData Deskbook is in its third edition and is a guide to understanding current discovery methods and federally mandated eDiscovery court requirements. It includes up-to-date case law and reflects the changing landscape of this dynamic area of practice.
Authored by senior members of the eData team in 2009, the first edition of the eData Deskbook quickly became an invaluable reference for firm lawyers and clients navigating data management and electronic discovery issues.
